I have a dell optiplex gx150 with windows 98. I just bought this computer off someone for cheap cuz they couldnt get it running. They deleted alot of programs and I had to download a lot of programs already. The people deleted the whole sound card device. I really need one to run sound programs correctly.
Did you try visiting dell website and going to the support link to download the drivers
here it is opendrivers.com, Well it worked great for me and therefore i hopes that it will also help you, but why u don't use windows xp in the new smart generation.
Go to the Dell web site and under the "Support" section you will be able to find all drivers you need. You can also download and Active X wdownload sound drivers dellhich will assess all your componants

Ugh...Windows 98. Chances are if the computer is that old, then HP or the sound card manufacturer no longer supports the driver you will need. I have the same problem with my wife's computer. Its a five year old Dell and they, nor the Mgr support the driver anymore. We just do without the sound.
If the computer has '98 on it, then its almost 9 years old and is literally considered a dinosaur. We invested in a new laptop. In the computer world, you gotta pay to play.
Any one of these sites should be able to help:
www.windrivers.com
or
www.drivers.com
or
www.DriverGuide.com
search using yahoo or google, type your device namdownload sound drivers delle and/or model then type "Driver Download" ... .
What I would recommend doing is going to Download.Com You can usually get anything you need from there, or go to the Dell website. BUT, I have to agree with the other guy, there is probably a 5% or less chance that they will be able to do something for Windows 98. You'll have to get another operating system. Borrow a disc from someone if you need to, but I don't think you'll have alot of luck with 98. Good luck and I hope you find something!!
There are a lot of driver collections in , I usually get my drivers on that website..
Go to Dell and click on support. You can get the drivers there..
