I saw somewhere that something might happen soon because the moon will be close to earth. Just wondering if it is true and why?
Not a lot.
But the moon causes gravitational effects in the earth. That is caused by the fact that the near side of the earth feels more gravity than the far side. Thus the earth is under strain.
That happens 24x7 365 days a year, every year.
But sometimes the moon approaches nearer to the earth than normal (as it is now).
That could conceivably result in an earthquake. But that earthquake would eventually have happened anyway
Could it do something to the magma under the crust because its in a liquid state?
Hardly much at all. The moon is too far away and not massive enough to have much of an effect at all on the Earth aside from tidal pulling. The only way that *this* eclose earthffect could cause natural disasters is if the tidal forces were strong enough to cause tidal heating (such as on Io from Jupiter) - this is simply not the case with our moon. The "supermoon" idea is completely absurd from a physical standpoint.
kelvin: due to tidal acceleration, the moon is moving away from Earth each year, not toward it.
The moon is close and getting closer but at a very slow rate maybe a thousanth of a centimeter every year but since its close to the earth it creates gravitational tension.. which u dont have to worry about theres a much higher probability that it will b due to something happening on the earth ex. the movement of the mantle... It also has to do with position where the moon is at will affect where something (might happen)
Every time the moon is on a side of the earth, because of its gravity, it will drawclose earth some of the water to that side like a weak vacuum cleaner (the sun does this too). Because it will come so close to earth this time, people speculate that there could be real "tidal waves" and not tsunamis. Hope this helps.
Tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic instability are results of the activity of the earth's tectonic plates and magma beneath the crust. It has little to nothing to do with the moon.
If there is a large tide (sun and moon together) at the same time as a storm surge, then that can overwhelm some coastal defences. E.g. this is why the Thames Barrier was built in London at great expense.
The moon will be one-and-a-half percent closer than its average close approach. You'll see no difference.
Nothing. The tides may be a bit higher than usual, but not that much higher.
Well the moon controls tides.
